Why this works

A rich, very high-fat dip that is calorie-dense and low in protein and fibre, so it’s best enjoyed in small portions.

High in saturated fat. Mayonnaise and cream cheese contribute most of the saturated fat, so regular large portions may not suit heart-healthy eating patterns.

Sodium from pickles and ranch. Pickles, jalapeños and ranch dressing add a moderate sodium load, which can add up quickly if served with salty dippers.

Very low carbohydrate and sugar. This dip is naturally low in carbs and sugar, which may suit lower-carb eating plans when portion sizes are controlled.

Method

  1. Finely chop the pickles and jalapeños.
  2. Mix the mayonnaise, ranch dressing and mustard in a bowl until smooth.
  3. Stir in the chopped pickles and jalapeños, then taste and adjust the sharpness with a little more pickle brine if needed.
  4. Chill for 10 minutes if you have time, then serve as a dip.
