Why this works
A rich, energy-dense savoury bun with moderate protein but high saturated fat and sodium, best enjoyed as an occasional meal rather than an everyday choice.
Saturated fat. Chorizo and cheese contribute a high level of saturated fat, which can be less heart-friendly if eaten often.
Sodium. Chorizo, cheese and brown sauce are all salty ingredients, so this dish is likely to be high in sodium.
Protein and calcium. The chorizo and cheese provide useful protein, and the cheese adds calcium, supporting muscle and bone health.
Method
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).
- Slice the chorizo sausages and cook them in a dry frying pan for 3–4 minutes until the fat starts to render and the edges take on colour.
- Split the buns, then fill each one with the cooked chorizo and a generous handful of cheese.
- Stir the brown sauce with a spoonful of water to loosen it slightly, then brush or spoon it over the tops of the stuffed buns.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes until the buns are hot through and the cheese has melted.
- Serve immediately while the cheese is gooey and the brown sauce glaze is glossy.
