Why this works

A rich, protein-containing appetiser that is high in fat and relatively low in carbohydrate, with salt and processed cheese/mayonnaise increasing its sodium and saturated fat content.

High-quality protein from eggs. Eggs provide complete protein plus micronutrients such as vitamin B12 and selenium, supporting muscle maintenance and normal metabolic function.

Saturated fat and sodium concern. Mayonnaise, cheese slices and added salt raise saturated fat and sodium, so this dish is best enjoyed in moderation if you are watching heart health or blood pressure.

Low carbohydrate. With very little carbohydrate, this recipe can fit a lower-carb eating pattern, though the calorie density is fairly high due to the creamy filling.

Method

  1. Boil the eggs for 9-10 minutes, then cool, peel and halve them.
  2. Remove the yolks and mash with mayonnaise, garlic mayonnaise, salt and black pepper.
  3. Spoon or pipe the filling back into the egg whites.
  4. Top each half with a small drizzle of chilli sauce and a little finely chopped cheese slice or grated cheese if preferred.
  5. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
