Why this works

A rich, energy-dense pasta bake that is relatively high in saturated fat and sodium, with modest protein and low fibre.

Bacon and sodium. Bacon is the main source of protein but also contributes a significant amount of salt and saturated fat, which can push sodium intake up quickly.

Calcium from dairy. Crème fraîche and milk provide some calcium, though the dish remains relatively high in fat compared with lower-fat pasta bakes.

Low fibre. Standard white spaghetti contributes limited fibre, so this meal is not especially gut-friendly or sustaining for blood sugar control.

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (Fan 180°C, 392°F, Gas Mark 6).
  2. Cook the spaghetti until just under al dente and drain it well.
  3. Fry the bacon until crisp, then stir in the crème fraîche and milk to create a creamy sauce.
  4. Combine the pasta and sauce in a baking dish.
  5. Bake for 10 minutes until bubbling, then serve hot.
